Officers were called to the parking lot at Stew Leonard’s at 4:10 p.m. on a report of a dog in distress, police said. The dog was in a hot car with only a small opening in the window, police said.
Animal control responded to the scene. Officers noted that the dog was “heavily panting” and drooling, police said.
Temperatures inside the car ranged from 98 degrees to 102 degrees, according to police.
Additional police officers responded and removed the dog from the vehicle, police said.
When the driver, Margaret Williams, 48, of Bridgeport, returned to the vehicle, she was issued a summons, police said. Williams was charged with cruelty to animals and released on a promise to appear with a court date of Aug. 30, police said.
